In January 2003, PGA Golf Professional Daniel J. Thomas founded the National Golf Scholarship Association (501c3non-profit) to provide "students" with more opportunities to play the game of golf. His goal was to create a program that would promote education, sportsmanship, and citizenship; while providing students with numerous opportunities to earn scholarships and
participate in competitive tournament golf. During the creation phase he discovered that there were numerous factors that hindered students from participating in the game including; costs, location, travel, and limited access. To overcome these hurdles the NGSA formed the Top50 Junior Tour to provide students with more opportunities to participate in professionally managed golf tournaments at a local level. The unique format of the Top50 Junior Tour provides students with unprecedented opportunities to play competitive tournament golf at no cost.

In 2005 the NGSA developed a program that provided students with employment opportunities at local golf courses, which in turn assisted local golf professionals find qualified students to
work at their facility during the busy summer season. This was a win/win program from the very beginning, which has already assisted more than 100 students find summer employment, and a great opportunity to develop their game at a local golf course. During the same year the NGSA developed another program that provides opportunities for students to earn scholarship points while assisting in community service activities sponsored by the NGSA.
In 2007 the NGSA televised the first Midwest Junior Championship with the assistance of Comcast and our sponsors to more than 1.3 million homes. The Midwest Junior Championship has been televised ever since and continues to be a big event for students and their parents each year.
In 2008 the NGSA launched Student Golfer Magazine. Almost immediately SGM became the "go to magazine" for student golfers and their parents. SGM is a quarterly digital magazine that highlights local students, golf professionals, high school and college coaches. In addition to individual highlights SGM provides numerous topical articles for students and parents to learn more about the game and opportunities in their state, college training information, and more. In the same year the Top50 Junior Tour was presented the Junior Golf Leader Award by the Michigan PGA for its tremendous contribution to junior golf and the growth of the game.
Since inception the NGSA and Top50 Junior Tour have provided students with more than 7,000 free rounds of competitive tournament golf, and more than $125,000 in college scholarships.
As impressive as those numbers are, the NGSA continues to develop new programs that enhance student knowledge and achievement. The NGSA now offers college assistance programs and Official Training Facilities for students to enhance their playing skills. The combined efforts of the NGSA, Top50 Junior Tour, Student Golfer Magazine, and PGA Golf Professionals provides students with one of the most comprehensive student golf programs in the country.
